Addison Pemberton Family Reunion 2000 Report
The Reunion Reunion 2000 was held the first weekend of August, 2000, as decided by the previous reunion. The gathering of Addison and EmmaÕs descendants took place in the beautiful mountains a few miles south of the rustic little gold minerÕs town named Idaho City, once the largest city west of the Mississippi save only San Francisco. (Some of the attendees took a lesson in gold panning and went home with a few glitters.)
The reunion started Thursday, August 3rd with a gathering around the big fireplace in the lodge while we renewed friendships, chatted about everything under the sun and had a few snacks. Some spent the night in the lodge, others opted for the motels in Boise, less than an hour away.
Friday was a big day at Arrowhead Reservoir. Grant Pemberton brought his ski boat and ferried us all to ÒcampÓ on the shore opposite the marina. The picnic table sagged under the weight of snacks and equipment as people took turns on the water. Things got pretty exciting when a very gusty storm blew in and stopped the boating for a few minutes. Then when it looked like we were in the eye of the storm, we quickly (his boat is really fast) got everybody and everything back to our vehicles and headed back to the lodge. There we had a great time again around the great fireplace, visiting, eating (of course), telling stories, and watching the little ones (13 children under 10 years of age).
Saturday morning we descended on Idaho City (pop. 370) and visited the shops, dipped candles, learned gold panning, dusted off some real antiques, and had lunch at Calamity JaneÕs. That evening Ethan and Emily Pemberton chefed up a wonderful meal on the large commercial range in the lodge and we sat around the big table in front of the fireplace and joked and laughed and took pictures, roasted marshmallows for ÒsmoresÓ, etc. etc. etc. It was wonderful. If you were there you remember exactly, if you werenÕt ... well, you just missed out thatÕs all.

Business Report
It was decided by the reunion to change the frequency of the reunion to a four-year interval. Several of the families in attendance also decided on how they would schedule their individual family reunions. One of the interesting observations made during these discussions was that we need to advertise the fact that the Addison and Emma Reunion is really just a gathering of individual family reunions scheduled to be at the same time and place, or, in other words, the Addison and Emma Reunion is really a combination of Stanley, Wendell and JC reunions, which in turn are gatherings of the families of each of those three sons, and so on down to the youngest. There was also a lot of support for the concept of shortening the Addison and Emma reunion schedule to just an afternoon so that individual families could have their own reunions and then attend the Òbig reunionÓ which would last only a few hours, and be held in a public park or other suitable location. The bylaws of the reunion say that at the conclusion of each reunion the current vice-president automatically becomes the President of the next reunion. Under these rules, Bradley Pemberton, 7340 W Emile Zola, Peoria, AZ 85381 (brad@pembertonfamily.com) is the current President. He would be glad to hear from any of you as to your wishes and ideas regarding scheduling of future reunions, or other reunion matters. Financial Report The 2000 reunion started with $198.53 in the Pemberton Family Reunion bank account. Donations at the reunion totaled $220 and expenses were as follows: Sterling Pemberton for his ski boat 40.00 Bill and Maxine Huckstep for the use of their lodge 40.00 Total in the bank for next reunion $338.53 (If you do the math on these numbers youÕll see that the bank pays a little interest on the account.) July 5, 2000
Hey, the 2000 Addison Pemberton Family Reunion is just a month away - Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 3, 4, and 5.
Here are the latest facts - we got good news and we got bad news. Well, not that bad.
[Note added at time of publication of this Reunion Report - the problems mentioned below yielded to a few man and woman hours of envigorating fun. All those who attended remarked how good the facility was for such an event and how much they enjoyed the reunion. The note about the showers turned out to be incorrect also. There were two showers in the lodge. They had been missed by earlier investigations no doubt because they were tub showers, not stall showers.]
The bad news is that when George Pemberton took a couple days and drove back to the reunion site to see it without a foot and a half of snow and got inside of the buildings, they didn't look as good as they did before. (See new pictures on the internet at pembertonfamily.com. Just click on News and Events and then click on the Reunion link.) There is no problem with integrity of the structures or dangerous situations - just dirt. The lodge is used by various groups, such as the Boise Chiropractor's Association, from time to time, but it hasn't been lived in for several years. It just needs a deep cleaning. Two or three families will be arriving on the 1st to do the cleaning. It should be fine by the time you arrive. The other thing is there are no showers, only a couple tubs in the two bathrooms. (We will try to rig a couple temporary outdoor showers before the reunion starts.) I guess the bottom line here is, please don't expect a modern 4-star resort. But for the price of using the place (zero) we really couldn't argue. We are hoping the low price will permit some of the young families to attend who otherwise might be locked out by the financial requirement. Think of it as a tent, RV and camp ground with a kitchen and group eating area.
Now, the good news -
Features:
Fun and games.
Meeting all the tribe.
Visiting in the kitchen, visiting around the dinner table, visiting around the unheated pool.
Picnicking at the lake and watching the water skiers. (At least one family is bringing a ski boat which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.)
Instant photos. We will have digital cameras, high quality scanner, computers and color printers to produce instant family group photos. Bring your old photos for scanning and with a little luck we'll build some multi-generational montages.
Pemberton Family Museum: Bring your mementos of Addison, Emma, or anyone else for display in the Museum.
Bring your Grandpa and put him in the museum. Keep him out of trouble for a while.Agenda:
Thursday, August 3rd. Arrive and get settled in.
8:30 PM Snacks and clink music in the main lodge lower floor - come and see who's gone gray and listen to somebody's tall tales. Roast some marshmallows in the fire place or pit?
Friday, August 4th. The main day.
9:00 AM Group Breakfast in the main lodge (paid for in your dues) 10:00 AM Group photo before the kids get their shirts any dirtier.
12:00 Noon Water skiing at Lucky Peak Reservoir 'til you've enough.
3:00 - 5:00 PM Potluck Picnic at Sandy Point (not paid for in your dues)
8:00 PM Snacks and Stories in the main lodge. More clink music and marshmallows if you want to.Saturday, August 5th
9:00 AM Group potluck breakfast (Picnic leftovers and whatever else you want to bring).
Accommodations:
Lots of room for tents.
There are places to park RV's (no utilities available at those sites).
Four bedrooms available to the oldest attendees and the mothers with the youngest infants. The rest of you better plan on a tent, RV or a motel. There aren't very many rooms in Idaho City so if you don't have a room yet, you will probably be staying on the eastern edge of Boise. See the reunion pages on pembertonfamily.com for motels near Idaho City. What to bring:
Family mementos for the Family Museum.
Old photos for scanning and reprints.
Pots and pans and griddles and table service (paper & plastic) for your family.Costs:
Please plan on contributing about $10 per person to defray the costs of electricity, supplies, and rental of the picnic area by the lake ($77 plus $3/car) and the group meals (Snacks and Breakfast). Infants and toddlers are free. Teen-age boys are $45. (joke). This contribution will hopefully leave a few dollars in the kitty to get the next reunion started a few years down the road. Who's coming? Last count was about 55 people. Be there.
