I have copies of the George Harrison Sanford King (GHSK) papers on
the Humphrey family from the Virginia Historical Society.
Putting this information with my own research, I have found some leads
that connect my Thomas Humphreys to Spotsylvania County, VA. The
descendents
listed for Captain Thomas HUMPHREYS are from census records, tombstones in Culpeper Co. (Richardsville
area), Historical Southern Families by the Boodie's, LDS data, Humphreys
Genealogy by Allan Sparrow Humphreys (not really helpful), The
Humphreys Family in America by Frederick Humphreys, M.D. (see Letter), and
Captain Humphrey's will, with "some" fill in from the GHSK data. I
believe that a great deal of information can be obtained in Spotsylvania and
Madison counties. I do not think
that GHSK did any research in either of them.
When I was in the area, I did not have enough information to adequately
research the information
Madison
County Virginia: Seeking records for Thomas J.
(Jefferson) Humphreys and his wife Lucretia P. Jones, especially deeds and
wills. He is child #10 on page
101, Vol XIX of Historical Southern Families.
I am especially interested in any data regarding land that he may have
received from his father or other ancestor.
For some reason, neither Mr./Mrs. Boddie or George Harrison Sanford
King have perused this line. But
he seems to have participated with his father in a number of land deals in
Culpeper County.
Spotsylvania
County Virginia: Seeking verification, or
expansion of the data presented is a letter that I found in The Humphreys
Family in America by Frederick Humphreys, M. D. published privately in
1883. Although many of the
lineages that Frederick Humphreys presents are totally impossible for no other
reason than the dating, there are little nuggets here and there that can be
verified. One of those nuggets is the letter quoted on page 1013:
(Deb's
Note Fauquier
Co., VA, Marriage Bond: John HUMPHREY & Dorothy McCONHIE 21 April 1790;
Bondsman, Robert McCONCHIE)
(Deb's
Note: 19
January 1797 Thomas Humphreys and Elizabeth RICHARDS.
Minister: Rev. John Woodville, Rector St. Mark's
Episcopal Church, St. Marks's Parish Register.
Her line is descended from Simon MILLER of Jamestown and Bacon's
Rebellion fame).,
From
Historical Southern Families Volume XIX, pages 97 - 101, we have
some additional information regarding Thomas Humphreys, namely that he was born
in Culpeper Co., VA in 1765 and died at "Locust Hill" Culpeper Co., VA
in 1849. Although Mrs Boddie does not say
where she obtained the birth date, it is certainly viable based on census data.
And the death date fits with Thomas' will.
Since Historical Southern Families is easily obtainable, I will
not quote it here. However, Mrs.
Boddie states that the father of Thomas Humphreys is James Humphreys, however,
she does not say why. She does say
that James Humphreys was born in Culpeper Co., in 1741, and died after 1784,
married Rachel, again with no reason given.
She also says he may have moved from Culpeper as there is no will
recorded there. Talk about
"leap of faith" reasoning. Mrs.
Boddie also says that James Humphreys is the son of John Humphreys of Brumfield
Parish, Culpeper Co., VA., based upon this John's will where he leaves property
to a James, Benjamin, Jesse, Jonathan and Mary.
Mr. King says the same thing because there was no one else around in
Culpeper County.
My
contention is that Thomas' line is possibly from Spotsylvania Co., VA where his
"supposed" brother lived. His
father may or may not be a James. I
am seeking information from Spotsylvania Co. regarding wills, deeds, etc. for
John Humphreys, father of J. A. Y. Humphreys.
Somewhere among them may be a reference to the wife, children, siblings,
or parents of John Humphreys. And
possibly a marriage record, or will from a Yarborough, that mentions a
Humphreys. Also, there should be a
deed where J. A. Y. Humphreys sold his inheritance when he moved to Nelson Co.,
KY.
I
have estimated that John Humphreys was born 1758 - 1770, and died 1828 - 1854.
His birth date range is based upon his marriage date of 1790, with the
later date based on a reasonable age for marriage (20), and the age at which his
brother Thomas married (32) for the earlier date.
I estimated his death date upon a normal life span of 70 years for the
early date, and his brother Thomas's age at death of 84 for the later date.
And also based on Thomas's marriage and age at death, I would not be
surprised if Thomas and John's father did get married to the Yarborough lady
around 1750 and die around 1800, but this estimate is really stretching it. To recoup, I see the lineage as follows: Humphreys
man who married a Yarborough lady
John Humphreys who married Dorothy McConchie
J. A. Y. Humphreys, the letter writer
two more sons and six daughters
Thomas Humphreys who married Elizabeth Richards
