LETTER FROM J. A. Y. HUMPHREYS; (2nd son of John) TO FREDERICK HUMPHREYS FOR THE BOOK, p 1013: " was born in 1802. He married Miss May, daughter of Stephen May; 2nd wife, Rebecca Carpenter and settled in Nelson County, KY, whose mother was a Slaughter. The May family was from Petersburg, VA and last wife's relations were form Madison and Culpeper, VA. My father, John Humphreys, married__-McConchie, 3d daughter of Alex'r McConchie, I suppose of Scotish descendants. My father had one brother younger than himself named Thomas, who married a Miss Richards, daughter of Major James Richards of Culpeper, VA and by whom he had, I am informed, 21 children, of which they raised seventeen, some of them living in Madison, VA some in Culpeper, some in Fauquier, and elsewhere. My father had 10 children, of which he raised 9, 6 daughters and 3 sons, of whom I am the only one living. My fahters mother was of the name of Yarbrough, of which descent I do not know--probably English. My father was a farmer and mechanic. My uncle, Thomas, was a farmer in Culpeper County. He has a son, Thomas J. Humphreys, living at Madison Ct. House, in VA, of some distinction as a lawyer, from whom more information respecting our ancestry may be had than I can give, having lived a distance so long and separated from the family associatons. Our friend may, perhaps, accomplish more by consulting him. I am now in my 67th year, and have not confined my remarks in shape or form of a table which is furnished. We have several families in this county of our name. They spell this name without the s, however, and if any way reated, I don't know it. They, I think, are from Maryland originally. My grand father McConchie was from Maryland I think and died a wealthy farmer of Fauquier, VA. My father lived and raised his family in Spottsylvania, VA, about 20 miles from Fredericksburg. Yours affec'ly ---PS--I saw Simon Humphrey today. He is Sheriff of this county--as regards his ancestry, he says he is a son of saml Humphrey, who is a son of Wm. Humphre, who came from VA to KY in 1787. He, Saml Humphrey, had 3 brothers, Simon, John and Thomas. His granfather, Wm. Humphrey, had a brother by the name of Rolly Humphrey; all died in this county (Nelson). Louisville, Nelson, KY April 27 1869 "this form was enclosed to my father, living in Bardstown, KY, who wrote the above. He has 4 sons, John, Samuel and Thomas and myself. My father came to this State about 40 years ago, and settled in Bardstown, Nelson Co., where he still lives. He is a farmer, and beforee the war was in independent circumstances, though considerably reduced by the plundering of both armies. "Resp't'y & Very Truly, WM. Taylor Humphreys, MD" Humphreys, Frederick, M.D., THE HUMPHREYS FAMILY IN AMERICA, New York: Humphreys Print, 1883, p 1013 |
