William PEMBERTON (b. ca.
1720, d. ca. 6 Jun 1786) Spotsylvania Co., VA. Married Elizabeth VAUGHAN,
daughter of Cornelius VAUGHAN (the eldest) and Elizabeth FOSTER <That she is
a FOSTER has never been proven to my satisfaction. My
research indicates that Elizabeth Vaughn was first married to Edward LEAVELL of
Spotsylvania Co., VA. Edward LEAVELL was born about 1710, and his will probated
14 Aug 1755. He was the son of Edward LEAVELL, will probated 1 Aug 1749, and
Mary <?>. Edward and Elizabeth Vaughan LEAVELL had four or five children
(the will isn't clear on the relationship of Edward LEAVELL, who may be a son.
But the proven children are James, whose will was probated 18 Sep 1783 in
Spotsylvania Co., VA; John, William and Nancy.) William PEMBERTON was guardian
to James LEAVELL (d. 17 Oct 1775) and James left a legacy to William's daughter
Nancy PEMBERTON COLEMAN whom he called "my sister.
According to Theresa Fisher, author of Forgotten
Companions, the PEMBERTON home place was just east of the current town of
Spotsylvania on the old Germanna Road and is now part of the Spotsylvania
Battlefield. Although no deed has been found, Larkin CHEW (???? - 1770)
indicated in his will (27 Mar 1770) that he had sold the land to William prior
to 1770.
William's will was witnessed by Thomas COLSON,
Sarah PERRY (wife of Thomas PERRY), James HUTCHERSON, and John TRUE (probably
son of Robert TRUE, nephew of John TRUE Sr., and brother to Robert TRUE). At the
time of the distribution of his estate (1793), the neighbors were Mr. LONG, Mr.
(Thomas) COLSON, (Clement) MONTAGUE, William SCOTT (probably Colonel William W.
Scott [15-Dec-1756 in Caroline County - 6-Oct-1819] who married on 1-Mar-1781
Ann Jones [1-Mar-1763, 18-Jun-1846] of Spotsylvania County.) and William
ROBINSON. Because of who purchased at his estate sale, and documents William
participated in as a witness, other relationships are indicated with Harry
ROBINSON, John LEWIS, William PORTER/PARKER,

If you have family in Spotsylvania, then
you need to click here:
1. Henry PEMBERTON b. ca. 1765; m. Elizabeth
SAMUELL by 1788; d. ca. 1810 in Henry Co., KY. Probably moved there
approximately 1794 when he sold his inheritance to Larkin.
2. Larkin PEMBERTON b. ca. 1767; m1. 7 Oct
1788 Mary NEWBY; m2. Behethelon WHEATLEY; d. ca. 21 May 1822 in Culpeper
Co., VA. This is my line.
3. Nancy PEMBERTON b. ca. 1760; m. ca. 1780
Thomas COLEMAN; d. 11 Sep 1811 Allen Co., KY.
4. Elizabeth "Betsey" PEMBERTON d.
after 4 Jan 1793. No other information known.
5. Mary "Polly" PEMBERTON m. ca 1800
Edmund CASON; d. after 29 Oct 1817. No other information known. Who is this
Edmund CASON? He cannot be the son of Thomas CASON (b. 1762 d. 8 May 1836 m.
24 Dec 1784 Nancy DAY b. 1765 d. 2 Jun 1850) as Polly had to be born by 1769
because she did not need a guardian in the 1785 will of William PEMBERTON.
Even if you count from the date of the distribution in 1793, she had to be
born no later than 1777. ALSO, Edmund is listed in the 1810 Warren Co., KY
census as a head of household. If he was born in 1804, this would be
impossible. And we do have a firm connection to Warren Co., KY. He
"could" be the son of William CASON (b. ca. 1745 d. 1814 m. Agnes
or Agatha PEMBERTON <?> d. 1821) But it all depends on the strength of
"ca. 1798" (as given by Carl CASON) for a birth date. Note the
Larkin which is both a PEMBERTON name and a name from that part of
Spotsylvania Co., VA. And the possibility that Agnes/Agatha is a PEMBERTON.
But if the 1798 is a fairly accurate guess, then he would be too young to be
a head of household in Warren Co., KY in 1810. And, he probably would not
have married a woman born 1785 - 1793, though it would be possible. OR is
there a 3rd Edmund CASON that has not yet been discovered? The
Mystery
6. Sarah PEMBERTON m1. 13 Jul 1789 Clement
MONTAGUE in Spotsylvania Co., VA; m2. 20 Mar 1817 "Col." Hardin
DAVIS in Barren Co., KY; d. 17 Sep 1846 Barren Co., KY (?).
7. Margaret "Peggy" PEMBERTON m. Oct
1785 - Jan 1793 Harmon HANER/HANOR/HANEY; d. after 1817 probably Warren Co.,
KY.
Other PEMBERTON families:
1. From _Abstracts of Cumberland County, Virginia
Will Books 1 & 2 (1749 - 1782)_ by Katherine Reynolds
Will of Richard PEMBERTON dated 30 Jan 1768/9
and probated 24 July 1769 names wife Francis and children WILLIAM, Martha,
James, RICHARD, George, Mary, Magdalene. This gentleman could be of an age
to by my William's father, and the estate was distributed at the right time
for William to use his portion to purchase the land in Spotsylvania from
Larkin CHEW. Also in the index to the book (quick scan only) are COLEMAN and
DeJarnette. This will needs to be fully researched. However, in _Cumberland
Co., VA Marriages 1749 - 1810_, a Richard PEMBERTON marries a Francis
BRADLEY on 1 Sep 1757 and a William PEMBERTON marries a Joanna Howard on 12
May 1771. If these are the marriages for the Richard and William named in
the will, then that excludes them from consideration.
2. From _Richmond County Virginia Wills_ a William
PEMBERTON had his estate inventoried on 5 Jul 1710. Also in the county are
MONTAGUE, COLEMAN, NEWBY and COLSTON (families with these names have strong
PEMBERTON connections).
