Ada Velva Potter's Parentage

George W. Potter, her father

Here is a tribute to George W. Potter, Velva's father, issued by the Town Council of Greenfield, Iowa , upon his death.

Here is a tribute to George Washington Potter, Velva's father, followed by an image of an early photo copy of the original document. The copy is so poor that it has been extracted here for easy reading.

George W. Potter

"So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan that moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night.
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasent dreams."

Thus did brother George W. Potter live, and ths did he die. His conduct, during the journey of life, secured the confidence, love and esteem of all who knew him. In business, he was honest and upright; in office, trustworthy and reliable; in church, truly humble and Christianlike; in his home, the kind and loving companion of all of its members.

And it is in remembrance of his many virtues, that we, his brothers and sisters of Greenfield Chapter, No.91, Order of the Eastern Star, pay our tribute of praise to him, and offer our sympathy to his sorrowing family and relatives. And we bid them lock up and hope, and in trusting reliance on God's mercy, console themselves with the blessed assurrance that he is not dead but sleeps.

"Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

Be it therefore resolved, that this memorial of brother George W. Potter be spread upon the records of this Chapter, and a copy be given to his widow and family.
