Miller

Margaret R. Amundson, CG (mailto:MRCACG@aol.com) has done some really ground breaking research on the prolific, and probably much married, Captain Symon/Simon Miller of Old Rappahannock county, Virginia.  The main focus of her research that relates to the Captain has been to prove that one of Simon's wives was not Margaret Gaines!  This relationship has gone unquestioned for YEARS.  However, I am sorry to report that this research has not done anything to help untangle all of the Simons that were named after the Captain for many so many generations.

Margaret's Timeline (as on-line at http://www.jenforum.org/gaines/messages/1892.html):

Many have said Daniel’s (Gaines) daughter Margaret was the same Margaret who was the wife of John Prosser. John’s wife was indeed named Margaret and Symon Miller, her second husband, states Anthony Prosser was Margaret’s son.

Timeline for Margaret (?) Prosser, Miller, French, Sommerville

bullet28 August 1673 John Prosser signed his will and named four sons including Anthony.
bullet30 June 1677 Prosser’s will presented for probate.
bullet16 February 1679 Simon Miller signed his will and named 6 children.
bullet30 November 1683 Margaret as widow of Simon enters into a lease agreement with Andrew Harrison.
bullet7 May 1684 Simon Miller’s will accepted for probate.
bullet5 March 1684/5 Margaret’s last appearance in the records as relict of Simon Miller.
bullet6 May 1685 Hugh French in court on behalf of the widow of Simon Miller whom he married.

Daniel Gaines married the widow Rouzee in 1662. This marriage date is derived from the record whereby John Catlett turned over the property of his half brother’s children to Gaines. Therefore the Gaines children would be born after that date. Anthony the son of Margaret (?) was born by 1673. A date when the eldest child of Daniel Gaines and wife Margaret would be no older than ten years; an age not acceptable for marriage in that society.

More from Margaret:

Therefore it is reasonable to conclude Margaret, the wife of Hugh (French), etc was not Margaret the daughter of Daniel Gaines.

Please read the will of Daniel Gaines (quoted below). You will note in it he did have a daughter Margaret who appears to have been newly married. As you read further down in the will you will note Daniel had no natural grandchildren on the date in 1682 when he signed his will. In his will he make a provision should all his children die without issue that his land should go to his step-grandson John Smith.

After you have read the will, go back and look at the information on Margaret, the wife of Anthony Prosser.  In the will of Symon Miller were learn she had a son Anthony by Prosser who was born at the time Prosser signed his will. [making about 12 years old at the time Gaines signed his will] Anthony Prosser died about 1719 so he was living when Gaines wrote his will.  Certainly Daniel Gaines would have made his residual heir his grandson before he would a step grandchild. The wife of Hugh French was not Margaret the daughter of Daniel Gaines. Who she was is a mystery.
